Hudson Valley Harvest: A Food Lover's Guide to Farms, Restaurants, and Open-Air Markets
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (June, 2003)
Author: Jan Greenberg
Average review score:

Must have for Hudson Valley travel
This is THE book for anyone who lives, works, visits or is even thinking of a trip to the Hudson Valley, this bucolic but agriculturally threatened area, just an hour north of New York City. Jan Greenberg not only tells where to buy and eat these outstanding (and tasty) products but in a non-preachy way makes the reader understand why it is important to support these local farmers and producers. Her profiles and stories of the farmers who grow the fruits and vegetables and raise the livestock are truly heartfelt and gave me, and will do the same I think for anyone else who reads them, a new understanding of what is like to be a grower where everything, from weather to the economy, is out of your control. This is the high risk profession!! It makes Wall Street look safe.

Above all, though, this is a book about enjoying food --buying it, serving it and tasting it. As Danny Meyer, owner of New York City's Union Square Cafe and other restaurants known for their support of local farms, writes - "This book deserves a place on the bookshelf (or in the glove compartment) of every itinerant aficionado of New York's bounty." He's right.

We loved it
We bought this book before a weekend trip to the Hudson Valley and can't imagine traveling to the area without it. It has everything you would want to know about the farmers and what they are growing and producing. It tells you where and what to eat and how to use what you buy at a farmstand or local farmers market. It also made us really think about the people who grow the food. Their stories are uniformly interesting, even moving. The author has a pleasingly gentle touch when she writes about issues so much in the news today like organics, the humane treatment of animals and keeping small farms viable. Even if you aren't visiting the Hudson Valley, this is definitely a worthwhile book to have and read.

This guide-book gives the best places to sip, sup & sleep!
As the author, I hope this pleasant read-reference guide will give you lots of appropriate suggestions to enhance your time away together. I'd like to read reviews from others, too.

A terrific resource for great places and good buys.
This book gives us great ideas for where to go-- from an afternoon's drive or overnight and especially for dinner and weekend plans. How often we've dropped a bundle on dinner and the place is lousy. This author knows what's terrific in every price range---and not just for couples.

Young and new to NY? This is for you!
A great overview of the greatest city in the world! The book is well arranged starting with an concise orientation guide; then there's a section devoted to the neighborhoods that give the City its heart and soul. There are restaurant and bar reviews, lists of cultural sites and an indispensable resource guide (everything from emergency dental care to renting bicycles!) Well designed with black and white photos and a usable index. This is a terrific gift for the high school grad coming to NYC for college as well as for the college grad looking to start out (yes, there's a section on apartment rentals.) The Guide is honest and up to date and best of all, it comes with a subway map to fit into your wallet.

Excellent!!!!
I just moved to New York, and this book has made the transition extremely easy. With its really helpful reviews, witty prose, and fun features, it can't be beat. Most other guides are extremely boring, but Inside New York reads like a novel. The City Living section was particularly helpful, teaching me all the basics of how to become a real New Yorker, like how to ride the subway and where to go for my dry cleaning. I recommend this book to anyone searching for an exciting adventure in New York! Be sure to check out the "Day-In" features, they are especially well-done.

JERSEY CITY IN PICTURES, PICTURES & MORE PICTURES
I WAS LOOKING FOR A BOOK OF PICTURES THAT WERE TAKEN AT THE SAME TIME THAT I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN JERSEY CITY. IT SEEMS THAT EVERY STREET I WALKED AS A CHILD, THE SCHOOLS I ATTENDED, AND THE PLACES I SHOPPED, WERE THERE. IT IS THE CLOSEST THING I HAVE TO A PHOTO ALBUM OF THE CITY IN WHICH I LIVED. IF YOU WANT TO GO BACK IN TIME, THIS BOOK DELIVERS THAT FEELING. I WISH MR.FRENCH WOULD DO ANOTHER AND ANOTHER AND THEN ANOTHER. IT WAS OBVIOUSLY WELL THOUGHT OUT WHEN THE PICTURES WERE ARRANGED AND GROUPED. YOU WILL FIND HE HAS IDENTIFIED THE PHOTO'S VERY WELL USING FEW WORDS.

Wonderful book, brought back so many memories
I thought it was an absolutely wonderful book that you can reread many times and never get bored. I found so many familiar places in the book and it brought back so many wonderful memories.

Knopf City Guide, New York (1998)

The #1 book for people who know only a little about NYC.
In a mad search for a good book about NYC, I came across the Knopf version. It's silver cover caught my eye at first, but when I opened the book and saw the pictures, maps, restaurant summaries, etc. I was sold. This book not only helped me find my way around the city, but also helped me to figure out what I wanted to do on a day trip. One of the best things about this book compared to others is that it includes many pictures of the sites you are likely to visit. Most other books that I saw only included a description, I like to know what I am looking for.

Overall, I gave this book 5 stars. It really captures what I need to know about New York.

A grand little guidebook.
"Knopf City Guide: New York" is a thorough and winningly-portable guidebook.

The seven authors provide excellent advice on where to stay, eat, shop, and visit. All this is beautifully coordinated with a hodgepodge of maps, photos, and charts.

Though the pictures are generally small, they couldn't be brighter or sharper. Whether it's the opulent lobby of the Marriott Financial Center or the extraordinary biscuits and muffins at Sarabeth's, the photos are a joy to survey.

Just as colorful and helpful are the multitude of maps. You certainly won't have any problems finding your way around the city using their sterling graphics and location indicators.

Like all the Knopf City Guides, "New York" is a grand little guidebook.

Lighthouses from Aloft: 51 Scenic New England Lights
Published in Paperback by Down East Books (September, 1997)
Author: Charles Feil

Excellent aerial artwork about the Great coast of Maine
Met this photographer/artist at the photo lab. Have enjoyed seeing his books on many coffee tables, where they do a great job of illustrating the Great State of Maine and her coast. Lighthouses are tiny vestiges of a past that we all should respect. Feil does that with his view from above. Accurate color shots at sunrise and dusk make these images rich and detailed. You just can't get the feel of the lighthouses and their importance from the ground.. Being free, up in the air, close to sea, Chuck Feil has done a great job in creating a book that entertains and illustrates this part of our heritage. Five stars!

Absolutely beautiful photography!
In LIGHTHOUSES FROM ALOFT Charles Feil has given lighthouse lovers and beautiful photography lovers a marvelous view. How wonderful to see the coastlines, rocks, neighboring land areas for these lighthouses that usually are seen in more close-up land views. Now I wish he'd come do the Michigan Lights! I've sent a note to the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association telling them about the book, so I'm certain it will be noted in an upcoming issue of THE BEACON, their membership publication. Keep up the great photos, Mr. Feil. I'm going to look into your other work.

A fantastic guide -- tourists and locals alike will enjoy.
What a wonderful tool this little book is. This LP guide to the midatlantic states provides information that both a foreign tourist coming to the area for the first time and a local searching for a new experience will find useful. In addition to being chock full of information the text is illuminating and humorous reading as well.

Brilliant & helpful
Of all the guidebooks I've read, I've found this guide to be the most helpful, well setout, motivating book yet. I've been in New York for 1 month now and I have found the book invaluable. I especially like the sections on transport. It offers choices not just a statement of what you need to do. Also, the way the attractions are all logically set out by areas is helpful in trying to plan your days and getting the most out of them. I will be in New york for the next 11 months and I'm sure I will continue to use my 'bible of New York' till I leave. Well done Lonely planet

Long River Winding: Life, Love, and Death Along the Connecticut

Long River Winding: Life, Love & Death Along the Connecticut
Long River Winding is a very interesting, reader friendly book with something for everyone. Anyone who likes history, travel and especially people, should find this a good book. It gives glimpses into people's lives, some famous and others not famous, with humor and sensitivity. I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it.

Great fun!
I loved this book! Highly enjoyable for armchair travellers, history buffs, and lovers of New England lore. I felt as if I were travelling with the author through the Connecticut River Valley, past and present, having experiences like riding with the chief of police in Holyoke, Massachusetts, witnessing family life in Mark Twain's home in Hartford, or meeting "the feisty women of Old Saybrook." Heroes, villains, witches, and geniuses are all here. There are probably 40 or so little-known human stories of "life, love, and death"that took place in New England but are universal in their themes of humor, drama, and poignancy. Travel notes at the end of each chapter help you visit the sites mentioned by the author, making this book a useful travel guide as well as fun to read. I never realized how fascinating the Connecticut River Valley is. It's one of America's great places and best-kept secrets.

Lost Railroads of New England (2nd Edition)(New England Rail Heritage Series)

Author: Ronald Dale Karr

Read it from cover to cover
I was a bit skeptical when I got the book due to its price. I was pleasantly surprised with the level of detail that went into the book. I remember watching the trains cross a grade near my house when I was a kid, and I always wondered how long it had been there, whose it was, and what happened to it. This book was able to answer those questions for me. I also gave me additional resources to check out.

A must for anyone interested in New England's railroads
This very informative book opens a door to the past, and thoroughly explains about the rise and fall of New England's once massive railrod system. Ronald Dale Carr also includes detailed summaries of each separate railraod abandonment as well as providing detailed maps showing were each railraod went as well as all the stops along the routes
